McSorley's Back Room
Etching
- 5.25 " x 7 "
- Edition: 100
- This work is a portrait of John McSorley and two friends at McSorley's Old House and Home. McSorley died before Sloan ever visited the bar â the print is based on a memory told by his son of his father always sitting there in the sun.
McSorleyâs Old Ale House (formerly McSorleyâs Old House and Home) has been a watering hole and the subject of art and literature for years. Established in 1854 at 15 East 7th Street, in today's East Villageâ McSorleyâs can boast of being New York Cityâs oldest continuously operated saloon. No piece of memorabilia has been removed from the walls since 1910. Everyone from Abe Lincoln to John Lennon has passed thru McSorleyâs swinging doors. Woody Guthrie inspired the union movement from a table in the front, while civil rights attorneyâs Faith Seidenberg and Karen DeCrow had to take their case to the Supreme Court to gain access to the âMen Onlyâ establishment. Women were finally allowed access to McSorleyâs in 1970!
